April 6-10th

Posted: April 6, 2020

Due Date:

Monday, April 6, 2020

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all doing well. I am thinking of you all during this unprecedented time. I am saddened that my time with your children was cut short, but our paths will cross again shortly. We are all in this together.

The following will help navigate our introduction to “Home Learning” as per the Dept. of Education’s “Continuity of Learning Plan”. We realize that the closure of schools as part of the government’s systemic response to Covid-19 will require change to our traditional educational approach.

I am sending you a list of suggested weekly literacy, numeracy and well-being activities to support your child’s learning at home. This list will be updated every Monday morning at 9 a.m. Our goal is to guide and support your child’s education as best we can. We want to be as flexible and reflective as well of everyone’s circumstances, whilst maintaining our immediate priority which is everyone’s health and wellbeing. This is a huge learning curve for all, and there will undoubtedly be “bumps” along the way. I want to reassure you that you are not expected to play the role of teacher nor will you be evaluated as such. Again, I understand that every family’s situation is different, but I am here to support your child as best I can to ensure the continuity of your child’s education and wellness.

Throughout the first week of our endeavour, homeroom teachers across the province will be reaching out to parents via phone calls. I will be contacting households whom either have an only child, and/or the oldest amongst siblings in order to discuss our journey over the next 3 months.  Rest assured all households will receive a call from a homeroom teacher.

Please note as well, that the Gretna Green and the ASD-N websites have a lot of pertinent information for the greater learning community in regards to the pandemic. I encourage you to check frequently for important notices. If you have any questions, or require further clarification, please reach out to Mr. Comeau and/or Mrs. Bransfield.

I am in the process of creating various accounts to useful academic websites that you and your child may find beneficial. Again, I will provide weekly updates as to ones I deem suitable, but for the time being I suggest using the one’s posted for now. More will be added throughout the coming weeks such as FLORA (French) and Dreambox (Math). Students will be familiar with some websites and others will be new. Once more, please choose what works best for your household moving forward.

It is essential that parents work with us, communicate, etc. as we home learn. I ask that you please e-mail me (ryan.glazier@nbed.nb.ca) so that I may provide you with usernames and passwords to your child’s various website accounts. Please feel free as well to browse the web, Facebook, etc. and create your own accounts to websites if need be. By all means run with something if you deem it beneficial to your child. Many companies and organizations have graciously opened their sites to free trial versions during the pandemic.

In short, here is what we are asking from you and your child (if possible):

Parents

· Provide a time and space to engage in home learning

· Oversee/support learning

· Communicate regularly on matters related to Home Learning

· Check teacher pages, websites, etc. for ongoing posts & updates

Students

· Commit to a daily routine

· Communicate any struggles, issues or concerns with Home Learning

· Give equal attention to academics and social-emotional well-being

· Reach out to guidance counselors as needed

The following times are a guideline set forth by the Dept. Of Education. They have recommended 1 hr/day for a total of 5 hours/week. How you choose to implement that is completely up to your discretion. Do what works best for your child and family.

Please do not forget as well to enjoy the outdoors, get some fresh air regularly, and laugh with your family. Refer to Mr. Ryan’s message (see below) regarding PE activities/challenges as well.

Please send along pictures of your child enjoying the outdoors, or simply wanting to say “hi” to their friends if you would like. I will post to my page.

Stay home, stay safe and wash your hands.

P.S. Remind students of their mindfulness jars…everything will settle in time J
