My grade 3 students loved  the Square of Life Project.    They learned a lot about their local environment and that of   other places around the world.  We had 7 squares around   our school yard in which the students observed the living   and non-living things in it.  We compared our school   environment with that of other places around the world.   Students then created Photo Stories as a final project.    Please check below for these 7 Photo Stories.

On Thursday during the live morning announcements Chandler and fellow news ancors Sooad wished Judge Judy happy birthday wishes.  Chandler's mother thought it would be a neat idea to send Judge Judy the link. Judge Judy responded to the email and was delighted with the boys and what they were doing.  You never know who is watching our morning announcements.  Check below to see the email sent by Judge Judy Staff.

We have some exciting news that will affect the children in our classroom this year.  We've been invited to participate in a program called Roots of Empathy.  This program teaches children about feelings, their own feelings and the feelings of others.  Once every three weeks, baby Lauren and her parents will visit the classroom.  A trained instructor will gather the children in the classroom around a green blanket and together they will watch the baby grow.  For more than ten years across Canada and internationally, thousands of children are learning respect and care for one another with the lessons started through their Roots of Empathy baby.  We are excited that we've been chosen to participate in Roots of Empathy and we hope you are too.  Keep checking back as we will be posting photos of baby Lauren and our session with her in our photo gallery.

Today was our first Student Showcase.  Isabella and Abigail were chosen to read their narratives.  The girls had wonderful stories filled with lots of description and "million dollar" words.  They did a super job reading their stories in front of the students.  I am very proud of them.  Great job girls!

On Thursday Sept. 23 we were able to go outside to   investigate our Square of Life.  We were amazed at all   of the living and non-living things we found.  We were   able to identify lots of things from our squares and we   collected samples of the things we were unsure of so   that we could research what it was.  It was a great   day! See the gallery below for more pictures.

Our students are involved in an interesting project called "Square of Life."  It is an internet-based collaborative project in which students will investigate their local environment and share that information with other students around the world.  Students will identify living and non-living things in their school yard, Share their findings with other classes, look for similarities and differences in the data, and prepare a final report based on their findings. Look for upcoming photos and videos to see what we discovered!  Today we were able to plot our 1m by 1m plots (squares) in various areas around the school yard.  See the gallery below for photos.
