In Social Studies, we are learning about our province. We will learn to locate our province on the map, talk about our cities, natural resources, transportation, jobs, climate and vegetation in New Brunswick. We are also learning Spring and Easter vocabulary.  In writing, students are working on a personal narrative writing piece. We continue to review writing and reading strategies on a daily basis. In Math, we continue to review estimation, mental math strategies and adding two and three digit numbers.  We are also working on subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers.

In French Language Arts, we have commenced a Health unit. We are learning about the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle. We are also looking at the different food groups and what types of food go in each group. We are talking about healthy, balanced meals and students will draw a balanced meal and present it to the class.  We continue to work on "Winter" vocabulary and we will work on narrative texts. We will focus on the Ideas and Convention writing traits. We will discuss what makes a good story (beginning, middle, end, details) and review the writing process (plan, write, revise, correct, edit, publish).  In Math, we keep reviewing our numbers from 0-1000. This week students continue to review basic math facts and some mental math strategies (doubles, near doubles, making ten). We are also working on rounding off numbers to the nearest tens and estimating sums.  We will have a math test on numbers to 1000 on Thursday.

   In French this week, we will be discussing activities that we like to do with our families. Students will also talk about their favorite hobbies/pastime. Oral structures may include:

     We completed our class book on " Nos animaux dometiques" (Our Pets).  The students enjoyed writing about their pet and presenting their pet.  I made many copies of their book.  I also uploaded videos of your child presenting their pets.  Please check out the videos on this site. 

     These last few weeks, your child has been bringing home levelled books seen during a Guided Reading session. They read their book for 2 nights instead of reading new books each night. I encourage rereading books to increase accuracy and fluency each time the book is read. Each Monday and Wednesday, I will send home one levelled book seen during a Guided Reading session. These next few weeks in French, we will  be discussing and describing pets that we have at home or pets that we would like to have. We will also describe our pets’ temperament. Your child is more than welcome to bring in a picture of their pet or a favorite animal that s/he likes. If you wish, you can send me an email with a pic attached ( monica.lockerbie@nbed.nb.ca(link sends e-mail)). They can share their picture with the class. Examples of oral structures that will be introduced this week :

J’ai un lapin. Il s`appelle __. Il a X ans. Je n’ai pas … Je veux avoir un ___ Mon animal préféré est … . Il s`appelle __. Il est gros. Il a X ans. Son corps est recouvert de ___ (poil, écaille, plumes). Mon ___ a de petites oreilles et les yeux __. Ses yeux sont ____, ses oreilles sont ___. Mon animal est ____ … (gentil, calme, excité, fidèle doux, heureux), We will make a class book about our animals next week to end our study on pets. I feel that the students will love this part of the curriculum! Finally, we will work on Halloween vocabulary and learn new songs. We will have a busy but fun few weeks!

Happy Monday!  This week in Math we will continue to work on patterns and our numbers, up to 50.There are several web links on my teacher page to practice the numbers in French. We will also learn how to take a survey using tally marks, and how do make a bar graph and picto-graph. For example, students will ask their friends: "Quelle est ta couleur préférée? "(What is your favourite colour?). Then, they will tally the answers and colour in the bar graph. In French literacy, we will continue to work on our first unit called "Je suis unique" (I'm unique). Students coontinue to learn vocabulary to describe themselves and their friends. They will also learn to express their preferences and dislikes. We continually review learned language structures, adding to the list weekly. Here are a few new oral structures for this week:

Qu’est-ce que tu aimes? (J’aime mon chien).

Qu’est-ce que tu aimes à l’école? (À l’école, j’aime la musique).

Qu’est-ce que tu n’aimes pas? (Je n’aime pas la pluie).

We will continue to learn a few new songs/ poems around this theme. Students will also continue to read thematic books with a partner on a daily basis. These books will be sent home as homework this week. Have a great week everyone! Bonne semaine!
