It's almost Christmas! Can you believe it? Time sure flies! In French Language Arts, we continue to review questions/oral structures from previous weeks and we are learning how to say what is in our community and discuss different modes of transportation. We are also learning Christmas vocabulary and will be writing a short Christmas story soon . Students are very excited as they love to write! I have great authors in my class!     In Math, we will keep reviewing our numbers from 0-1000. We will continue to work on representing numbers in different ways, skip counting, and ordering numbers. Please remember to practice addition facts each night and check out the addition games that I posted in the "Web " link.     Bonne semaine les amis!

You probably heard your child talking about “The Daily Five " or "Les super 5". I will fill you in on what The Daily Five is all about. The Daily Five is a way of structuring the reading block so every student is independently engaged in meaningful literacy tasks. These research based tasks are ones that will have the biggest impact on student reading and writing achievement, as well as help foster children who love to read and write. Students receive explicit whole group instruction and then are given independent practice time to read and write independently while I provide focused, intense instruction to individuals and small groups of students. This is done on a daily basis. The Daily Five are comprised of:     Read to Self Work on Writing Read to Someone Listen to Reading Word Work Most often, I will do Guided Reading sessions with small groups of students during this time. I will spend time learning about your child’s strengths and greatest needs as a reader in order to best plan for each student’s instruction. Students will continue to bring home a book read in class during a Guided Reading session (leveled book). Please ask your child to read the book 3 times each night. This will help with fluency and comprehension.

In French this week, we will be discussing activities that we like to do with our families. Students will also talk about their favorite hobbies/pastime. Oral structures may include: Je joue ..              Je promène mon chien au parc.                  Je magasine au centre d’achats avec…      We completed our class book on " Nos animaux dometiques" ( Our Pets).  The students enjoyed writing about their pet and presenting their pet.  I made many copies of their book.  Your child will be bringing home the book this week or next week.  Please listen to your child read their book to you.  Enjoy!      Starting this week, students will read a leveled book seen during a Guided Reading session. They will read their books for 2 nights instead of reading new books each night. I encourage rereading books to increase accuracy and fluency each time the book is read. Each Monday and Wednesday, I will send home one leveled book seen during a Guided Reading session.Happy reading!      In math, we will complete our Patterns unit. The students will have an end of the unit test on Friday. Have a great week!

This week in French, we  continue to talk about our families. For example: How many people are in our family, who are our family members, what do they look like, what kind of personality do they have, what they like to do, etc.  Students will also create a Halloween monster and orally describe and write about their monster in their writing journals. This activity is a great way for students to practice all of the French structures they have been learning since September. In Math, we will work on numbers 0-100 and also complete our unit on Patterns by the end of next week.  I will send home a practice sheet on Patterns next week. Students should be able to: • Identify, extend, create, and compare increasing patterns.• Identify, extend, create, and compare decreasing patterns.• Find pattern rules.• Display number patterns on hundred charts.

Students are using vocabulary/oral structures taught in class with more ease and accuracy. I am pleased with their efforts in class! In French, we continue to explore our unit: “What makes me unique?” We will be reviewing previously learned structures as well as adding some new vocabulary /structures about " Family "(Ma famille) and Halloween. We will finish our "Animaux domestiques (Pets)" books this week.                        In Math, we continue to work on patterns and numbers up to 90.   Bonne semaine les amis!

This week in French, we will be talking about animals. We will be discussing and describing pets that we have at home or pets that we would like to have. We will also describe our pets’ temperament. Your child is more than welcome to bring in a picture of their pet or a favorite animal that s/he likes. They can share their picture with the class. Examples of oral structures that will be introduced this week : J’ai un lapin. Il s`appelle __. Il a X ans. Je n’ai pas … Je veux avoir un ___ Mon animal préféré est … . Il s`appelle __. Il est gros. Il a X ans. Son corps est recouvert de ___ (poil, écaille, plumes). Mon ___ a de petites oreilles et les yeux __. Ses yeux sont ____, ses oreilles sont ___. Mon animal est ____ … (gentil, calme, excité, fidèle doux, heureux), We will make a class book about our animals next week to end our study on pets. I feel that the students will love this part of the curriculum! Finally, we will work on Halloween vocabulary and learn new songs. We will have a busy, but fun week!

We will be starting a mathematics unit on increasing and decreasing patterns. Recognizing and analyzing patterns is an important part of mathematical thinking. Patterning concepts lead to work with algebra in higher grades. In this unit, your child will:  • Identify, extend, create, and compare increasing patterns. • Identify, extend, create, and compare decreasing patterns. • Find pattern rules. • Display number patterns on hundred charts. • Use patterns to solve problems. Patterns can be found all around us. Encourage your child to look for patterns around the home and talk about them. Here are some suggestions for activities you can do at home: • Look for patterns in your family’s activities as marked on a calendar at home. What activities do you do daily? Twice a week? Every week? • Use small objects like buttons or coins to make patterns that grow or shrink. Encourage your child to describe and extend the patterns. • Count collections of nickels and dimes by 5s and by 10s. Count pennies by 2s.    *** We will continue to work on numbers from 0-100 in order to be better prepared for our 2nd unit: Numeration. We will also work on Bar Graphs and Pictographs.   Mme Lockerbie

Each Friday, students have a spelling test on the words studied in class during Word Work. Presently, they are working on sight words.  Students practice their words in class through daily activities. If you would like to go over our spelling words with your child at home, you may do so. Each week, I will write our 6 spelling words on this website.

This week in Math we will continue to work on our numbers, up to 60. There are several web links on my teacher page to the numbers in French. We will also learn how to take a survey using tally marks, and how do make a bar graph and picto-graph. For example, students will ask their friends: "Quelle est ta couleur préférée? "(What is your favourite colour?). Then, they will tally the answers and colour in the bar graph. In French literacy, we will continue to work on our first unit called "Je suis unique" (I'm unique). Students are learning vocabulary to describe the five senses and the parts of the body. They will also learn to express their preferences and dislikes. We continually review learned language structures, adding to the list weekly. Here are a few new oral structures for the week: Qu’est-ce que tu aimes à l’école? (À l’école, j’aime la musique). Qu’est-ce que tu aimes? (J’aime mon chien). Qu’est-ce que tu n’aimes pas? (Je n’aime pas la pluie). Qu’est-ce que tu adores? (J’adore les souliers). We will continue to learn a few new songs/ poems around this theme. Students will also continue to read thematic books with a partner on a daily basis. They will also write on a daily basis. Have a great week everyone! Bonne semaine!

Just a reminder that the students will have a quiz on numbers 0-30 on Friday. Each Friday, they also have a spelling test on the words studied in class during Word Work. Presently, they are working on sight words. I do not send a spelling list home as the students practice their words in class through daily activities. Each night, students will continue to read a book seen in class and read the "sound of the day" sheet. They have seen and practiced all the vowels and will be working on the consonants this week. I'm very impressed with their reading so far! Wow! They will also need to review the poem/song of the week and their math sheet of the week. Keep up the great work boys and girls! *** Remember... The students will have a monthly homework calendar that is placed in their daily folder at the beginning of each month. Children are expected to complete their homework on a nightly basis.
