It is with sincere pleasure and sadness that I write this last entry on my teacher page for my grade 5 students and parents. I had such a wonderful year teaching each and every one of you! You are all so wonderful. My first year as a teacher could not have been with better students and parents. The support from all aspects of the community was beyond what I expected. My students taught me as much as I taught them. It has truly been a remarkable and incredible year. I would like to thank the parents and guardians of my students. Your support and understanding throughout the year was very much appreciated. I thank you for the opportunity to teach your delightful children. It is a year and a class I will never forget! Félicitations mes étoiles de cinquième année! Bonne chance l’année prochaine et les années qui suivent. Vous êtes tous capables de réussir!

Congratulations to Amber for being the first student to successfully estimate the amount in my jar! Every week, I place a jar on the table for students to practice their estimation skills. Each student may take up to two guesses per day. This week we had grains of rice. I asked them to estimate how many cups of rice were in the jar based on what ¼ of a cup of rice looked like. Amber successfully guessed 4. BRAVO :D I have also sent home the Math text books along with students’ duo-tangs for math. There will be a unit test on Tuesday, April 9th. I will be available Monday at lunch time if students would like some extra help with the multiplication and division strategies we have been working on. In the text, they can practice any questions from lesson 1 (page 72) to lesson 9 (page 104) and questions in the “Montre ce que tu sais” on pages 114-115. THIS IS NOT HOMEWORK! These are simply places to look to practice different questions for the upcoming test as a means of studying. I look forward to meeting with all the parents over the next few days J Mlle. Steeves

This week the students were asked to guess how many gummy bears are in the package. Some of the students realized that they could figure out a number very close by looking at the back of the package. They noted that 14 gummy bears had a total of 38g. They also noted that there is a total of 350g in the package. The students are stuck. They can't seem to remember how to divide. They know they can figure out how many grams each bear is if they divide 38/14 but can't remember how. Theyir challenge this weekend is to work with the division and show their work. We will test out the gummy bears Monday :)
