Welcome back to another great week in Kindergarten! Our very own Samantha and Kayla are featured in the latest GG Times Video on Mad Science!  Follow the link below to see them in action. Great job, girls!http://gretnagreen.nbed.nb.ca/video-news/mad-scienceWe will continue to practice our song for the Remembrance Day Ceremony this week. You are all doing a great job! In Math, we are working on counting/making small sets, showing more/fewer objects and the numbers 0 to 5. Our letters for the week are Mm (Missy Mouse) and Nn (Nigel Nightowl).  Remember to practice all the alphabet and letter sounds at home.  Mm is found in Miss Matheson, Samantha, Marshall, Matty and mouse. What happens to your lips when you make the /m/ sound?  Nn is in Caden, Wynston, Kianna, Samantha, Dean and nice.  Where does your tongue go for the /n/ sound?  Look for these letters at home! November homework calendars go home on Monday.  You will also have new sight words to practice.  It's important to practice these at home in order to help you become a stronger reader!

Happy Halloween!  This is a very busy week for Kindergarten! Our letters of the week are Kk and Ll.  The letter k can be found in kangaroo, Kayla, Kianna, kick, king and Jack.  L is in lollipop, Ella, Marshall, Emmily, Kayla, Rhylee, lick, love and like.  What happens to your tongue when you make the /l/ sound?  To print the letter K, use the ABC Boom strokes Plop, weeeee, weeeee.  The lowercase is the same except the first weee is shorter.  For an uppercase L use the strokes plop and vroom.  A lowercase is printed with just a plop! Monday, October 27th – Pumpkin Decorating Day & Buddy Writing Spooky Stories Tuesday, October 28th – Scary Hair Day Wednesday, October 29th – Treat Bags (Student Council) & Gym Class Halloween Games Thursday, October 30th – Orange & Black Day Friday, October 31st – Costume Parade & Wrap the Teacher Mummy Contest.  Students can bring their costume to school and change into them after lunch.  Please don’t send your child with costumes/masks on in the morning as we will be having a regular school morning.  If you are sending in treats, please keep in mind that we are a nut free school and we have students in Kindergarten with nut allergies.  Treats that are individually wrapped are easiest for students to take home.  Thank You!!!!

The Quiet Machine - Beginning Sounds

Posted: October 19, 2014

This week we will be working on the letters Ii (Inny Inchworm) and Jj (Jerry Jellyfish).  Ii is a vowel and can make 2 sounds. It can make the short /i/ sound in words like pig, lip, slip and igloo or it can make the long /i/ sound as in pie, ice cream, night and pineapple.  Vowels are hard workers!  To print the uppercase I use the ABC boom strokes - plop, vroom, vroom.  Lowercase i is made with a plop and a tick! Practice printing these at home.  Jj can be found in the words jeep, jig, Jennifer and just.  Look for words with the letter j in them at home.  Check your food labels and newspapers. It is very important to practice letters and sounds at home. We are working on using begininng sounds and stretching out words when writing.  Ask your child to tell you what letters certain words begin with (Can you tell me what car starts with? How about elephant?) and have them try to spell by stretching out for sounds.  A fun game to play is the Quiet Machine on pbskids.http://pbskids.org/lions/games/We will finish up our Math unit on patterns this week and start working on the numbers 0 to 5.  Keep searching for patterns at home. Try and find some number patterns! Picture re-take day is Wednesday. Please let me know if you want your child to have a re-take. Library is Thursday. We are going to have a super week in Kindergarten!

We got together with Mrs. O'Toole's class today for a walking conversation station (activity for developing oral language skills).  We each found someone we didn't know in the other class to be our partner.  We went for a walk around the playground stopping along the way to talk to our new friend...

This week we are working on the letters Gg and Hh.  Show your parents the signals for Gordo Gorilla and Honey Horse.  What sounds do they make?  The /g/ sound can be found in the words gum, guitar, dog and great.  /H/ is in house, horse, happy and hello.   Practice printing these letters at home.  Keep practicing the sight words for October (a, I, like, and, the, to).     The school fundraiser ends on Friday.  Library is Thursday. Interim reports will be sent home on Friday.  Please sign and return the bottom of the report.  Have a great week!
