This week is our first Mango Mania of the year. Students are encouraged to participate by limiting TV and video/computer games to a maximum of 1 hour or less screen time each day this week! Teachers will be keeping track of students' progress each day.  Mango is a community based program of the Regional Health Authority.  Their vision is to make our community "the very best" in healthy eating and acting living.

School basketball will begin on Monday, November 16th and run for 8 weeks. The Grade 2/3 program is an intramural school program. The Grade 4/5 program involves games in other schools in our district. We do not have a schedule yet for the Grade 4/5 program; however, we know the students are eager to get started.Schedule:Tuesday – Gr. 4/5 Girls Basketball – Sharon Gardiner, Tanya MathesonWednesday – Gr. 2/3 Girls Basketball - Carolyn Simmons, Derek HutchisonThursday – Gr. 2/3 Boys Basketball – Mr. Ryan will help to get this team started but we are still searching for a coach.

Operation Christmas Child is an opportunity to help a child in need at Christmas time. You can, wrap, pack and send a shoebox overseas with Operation Christmas Child. Last year, through Operation Christmas Child, over 1.2 million shoe boxes packed full of gifts and goodies were wrapped, packed and sent to children in disadvantaged situations by children and adults in the UK.

The students of Gretna Green Elementary are enjoying the events taking place during Hallowe'en Week.  On Monday, students decorated their class pumpkins, which are currently on display in the office.  Tuesday was Spooky Story Day, and the students got together with their buddy classes to share their stories.  Today, Wednesday, was Crazy Hair Day.  Students and staff used their imaginations and there were lots of wacky hairstyles to be found.  This afternoon the students met in the gymnasium for the Wrap the Teacher Mummy Contest.  Two students from each class were selected to wrap their teache

 Please note that the Soccer Jamboree scheduled for Saturday October 24th has been cancelled due to the wet and snowy conditions of the soccer field.  It will however, be re-scheduled for the Spring.

On Wednesday October 21, 2009,  permission slips for the H1N1 vaccination were sent home to parents.  If you did not receive it on Wednesday, you will get it on Thursday.  These slips need to be returned to the school by October 26th.  The  dates to Immunize Gretna Green students are November 4, 2009 and November 25.  Children under the age of 10 will need to receive 2 vaccinations. Parents will be notified if the dates for these vaccinations change.

During the month of October Gretna Green students will be reading Bullying Awareness messages during our Morning Announcements.  October 4-10 is National Bullying Prevention and Awareness week.  As well, November 15 - 21 is Bullying Awareness Week.  At Gretna Green, we believe that "Everyone has the right to be respected and the responsibility to respect others, in person and on-line!  This is why we expect our students to live and play by the "Golden Rule"; Treat others the way you want to be treated.

Kindergarten Registration for the 2010-2011 school year will take place between October 13 -16.  Parents can visit the main office at Gretna Green and fill out a registration form.  You will also need your child's birth certificate and medicare number. Early registration allows teachers, principals and school district staff time to organize several opportunities to meet with parents and children before school begins the following September.

On Friday October 2nd, Gretna Green Elementary had a new acting Principal and Vice Principal.  Nicholas Gallant, a Grade One student, and Keaton Dedam a Grade 5 student, were the lucky children who got to take over the office for the day.  Students who donated a loonie for the Terry Fox Penny Drive had their names entered for the Principal For a Day contest.  The school raised $500.00 for this worthwhile cause.

To celebrate International Walk To School Month, the staff, students and parents from Gretna Green walked to school.  Friday, October 2nd, 2009 the school community met at Northumberland Square mall to start the half an hour walk to school.  The students really enjoy this walk to school and they are refreshed and ready to learn when they arrive at Gretna Green!
