To celebrate the beginning of the 2010 Olympic Games, we participated in the Gretna Green Math Olympics.  Mrs. LeGresley and the boys and girls in 2M created an amazing flag representing our country.  Each square shows something interesting about Canada.  Drew created a cool mascot that is a maple leaf/beaver hockey player.  They were able to show the flag to their Dallas penpals over Skype and explain how it was created.  Ms. Manuel's class in Dallas even helped name the mascot - Pip!  Check out the video to see what a great time they had!

We are starting a new unit in Math on Measurement.  In this unit, your child will be learning how to read a calendar and develop an understanding of linear measurement, distance around, and mass. The Learning Goals for this unit are to: read calendars to find the date and to learn about days and months; estimate, measure, and compare lengths and distances around objects using non-standard units, such as paper clips, straws, or Snap Cubes; estimate, measure, and compare masses using balance scales and non-standard units such as beads, blocks, or Snap Cubes; and to solve everyday problems about measurement.

This month, we are working on the Organization Trait.  Stories that are organized flow smoothly in an order that makes sense.  To check to see if your story is organized ask yourself these questions:   a) Do I have an opening that catches attention?  b)  Is my story easy to follow?  Does it make sense?            c)  Does my watermelon have seeds? (Do my supporting ideas connect to a main message?) d) Does my story have a good ending that ties everything together?

Once upon a time there was a groundhog named Groundhoggy.  One morning he woke-up very nervous.  The reason he was so nervous is because today was Groundhog Day and Groundhog Day was very important to Groundhoggy.  He hopped out of bed, ran to the bathroom and took a bath.  Next he brushed his teeth.  Last, he got dressed.  His big day was about to begin!  He ran up his hole to look for his shadow.  At the same time, he crossed his fingers hoping that he wouldn't see his shadow.  He did not want 6 more weeks of winter. It was too cold!  But when he managed to get to the top, he didn't see a thing!  "Early Spring!" he yelled.  And that is the story of Groundhoggy.                                                                                   - by Isabella

Guess what?  I lost a tooth last night! When I got into bed I said my prayers.  I wiggled my tooth a bit.  It was loose.  So I decided to go to the bathroom.  Before I knew it, my tooth was out!  "Dad" I called.  I went downstairs to show him my tooth. He laughed when he saw me then he helped me with my tooth.  It was gorgeous!  Then he tucked me back into bed.                                                                                 by Grace
