Friday, February 5 was TWINS DAY at Gretna Green Elementary and Sergeant Merle Campbell and his twin brother, Chief of Police, Earl Campbell were guest hosts for the Live Morning Announcements! Check out the image gallery for more pictures!
The GG Times crew are very excited about their upcoming news report production. They have been invited by the District 16 Technology Team to report on this weekend's pond hockey tournament. Their report will be uploaded to a running blog for the entire world to see! Throughout the past two weeks the Gretna Green School Comunity has been raising funds and donating medical supplies to help the people of Haiti. The funds raised were donated to 99.3 The River, which will be donated to the Red Cross. The medical supplies donated will be given to ORA International Canada. Thank you to all our school community for Filling Our Bucket for this very worthy cause. We raised $700.00 and over two large boxes of medical supplies!!
The students of Gretna Green have been making the best of "things to do" during the winter months. Skating has proven to be a big hit for all of our students and parents alike. We would also like to thank all of our parents who volunteer regularly to make our skating expeditions memorable!
To celebrate Family Literacy Day, staff, students, parents and friends attended at PJ Party hosted by the Gretna Green Home and School. Volunteer readers read their favorite stories to small groups of students. Volunteer readers consisted of parents, former students, supply teachers and our very own custodian, Mr Sandy MacKinnon. Afterwards, the Home and School treated everyone with milk and cookies. As a very special treat, the Home and School also gave every student a brand new book to take home. The party was well attended!
To Celebrate Family Literacy Day,on Wednesday January 27, Gretna Green staff and students came to school dressed up as a character from their favorite book! Check out the great costumes in our Image Gallery.
On Monday, January 18, Gretna Green had a visitor from SMART Technology. Deena Zenyk, Education Consultant for SMART was visiting District 16 and chose Gretna Green for one of her stops. Ms. Zenyk watched as students broadcasted the morning annoucements, visited our clasrooms and was interviewed by our GG Times Crew. Check out the video on the GG Times page.
On Saturday, January 23, Pre-Kindergarten students who are enrolled at Gretna Green for the Fall of 2010, had an opportunity to visit our school. Students were treated to fun with the Smartboard, a story, a school tour and other fun activities. Their next official visit will be for the Teddy Bear Picnic in March.
In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, the staff and students at Gretna Green Elementary feel obligated to help out with both monetary and first aid donations.
We have set up buckets in each classroom,one in the cafeteria and one in the office for anyone interested in donating spare change, first aid supplies or even small school supplies. All donations will be given to the Red Cross. Buckets will remain in classroom until the end of next week. Thank you for helping!
On Wednesday, January 20, 2009 Olympic athlete, Andrew Russell, came to visit the students at Gretna Green Elementary. Mr. Russell is a summer Olympian from Nova Scotia. He is a canoeist. Mr. Russell was also a torch bearer this year when the Olympic torch came to Nova Scotia. He brought his Olympic Torch with him to show students. The excitement in the gymnasium grew as Mr. Russell passed around the torch, his medal and his Olympic Ring. This visit was made possible through RBC.
