On Wednesday April 29, 2009 Gretna Green held its' annual Oratory contest for grades 3-5 students. Every year the Douglastown Lions Club sponsor this contest for Gretna Green students. Four memebers of the Lion's Club are judges and they also provide cash prizes and trophies for the top finalist.
This year's top three finalists were: First Place -Jayden Jones, Second Place- Lexie Peterson and third place - Sam Boulay.
The Gretna Green Floor Hockey Team had another great season. Coached
by Mr. Ryan and Mr. Wood the team made their way to the final game
against St. Andrew's. There were 4 teams in the league this year;
Gretna Green. Croft, St. Andrew's and Harkins Elementary. All four
teams played Home and Away games against each other. Gretna Green met
Croft in semi-final action. The game ended in a tie which resulted in
a shoot out to determine the winner. Gretna Green won and advance to
the final game against St. Andrews. Unfortunately, St. Andrew's were
After completing a book study on Charlotte's Web, Grade 3 Frost presented a Wax Museum for Gretna Green students to see. The class chose several of the most important scenes in the books, designed a background and dressed in character. When students came to view the museum, narrators from Grade 3 described the scene.
This year the students at Gretna Green experienced their first school
wide Science Fair. All students from Grade 1 - 5 prepared Science
Experiements for the rest of the school, and judges, to view. Students
were very enthusiastic about describing their projects! Only six
projects could be chosen for the District #16 Science Fair. Congratulations to the students chosen; Zachary Miersh(Rotten Fruit), Kamryn Morehouse(Paper Towels), Shaylin McFarlane and Brydie Trevors(Popcorn), Madison Matchett(Recycling), Thomas Manderson(Gummy Worms) and Erin Savard & Lauren MacTavish(Molding Bread).
Mrs. Blakley organized a chess club again this year at Gretna Green
Elementary. There were 45 students that gave up their noon hours once
or twice a week to challenge their peers to game of chess. 9 Gretna
Green students attended the District 16 Chess Tournament: Alex Williston, Gillian Cassidy, Broday Browne, Drew Blackmore, Kaitlyn Comeau, Sophie Poirier, Ben Freeze, Patrick Hache and Koby Donovan.Good Luck to Koby Donovan, Drew Blackmore, Brody Browne and Kaitlyn Comeau who will be attending the Provincial Chess Tournament on April 4th.
Student Appreciation Week was February 22 - 27, lots of fun was had by
all. There was a daily draw for prizes, the annual Survivor(Teacher vs
Student)Contest, Wacky/Tacky Day, Crazy Hat/Hair Day and everyone's
