Happy Valentine's Day!   This week your spelling words are all from the "ock" word family. Remember that these words have the short sound for o in them. Some words from this family are: sock, rocket, block and clock.   On Tuesday we will check in with our pen pals over Skype.   We will continue to work on Sentence Fluency in our writing. It's important to make sure that our sentences start differently and are different lengths in our stories.   The C.U.T.E Awards are Wednesday night at JMH.  The Math Problem videos that you made in grade 1 are nominated for an award and so is our class webpage! Yay!   Congratulations to Cameron who completed Reading 2 today and has started Reading 3! Way to go!   We will finish off the week with  buddy reading and math centers on Friday.   Have a wonderful week!

It's another busy week at Gretna Green! On Wednesday, Mrs. Simmons will be here to video tape students displaying their special talents.  If you have a special talent you'd like to showcase, let me know tomorrow.   We will Skype tomorrow with our Dallas pen pals.  I can't wait to hear what they did on their 4 days off from school due to the snowy and icy weather they recieved!  We will tell them about measuring our snow today and compare the amounts.   This is the last week for basketball.  The last practice for girls is on Wednesday and the boys will finish up on Thursday.   Interim Report cards will be sent home on Friday.   For any of you bringing in Valentine's on Monday, here's our class list:  Amy, Julianna, Ashlee, Skylar, Logan, Caleb, Jaden, Drew, Mia, Samantha, Alea, Megan, Cameron, Hunter and George.   This week, your spelling words all have the suffix "ing".  Here's the link to the fun game we played in class to practice spelling ing words: http://www.firstschoolyears.com/literacy/word/other/prefixes/interactive...

We've been very busy this week learning about contractions.  Contractions are pairs of words that are combined with an apostrophe.  For example, couldn't is the contraction for could not, didn't is the contraction for did not and we're is the contraction for we are.   How many contractions can you find in this message?  Tell me tomorrow and get three tickets!   Use the attached link to play a fun contraction concentration game! http://www.learninggamesforkids.com/word_games/vocabulary-games/contract...   Remember to practice your addition and subtraction facts every night.  Use the strategy sheet that was sent home to help.  The more you practice, the better you'll be!   Fast ForWord is going very well. Many of you have finished Reading 1 and have moved on to Reading 2.  Keep working hard!   Our Skype with Dallas this week was fun.  I can't wait to talk to them next week and hear about the Nor'easter they were supposed to get!   Keep thinking about your costume for Come in Character day (Wednesday, January 26).  Remember that Robert Munsch characters are easy and fun to put together.  Pinkalicious, Junie B. Jones and Fancy Nancy are great ideas too!   Note to parents: We are looking for volunteers to read at the PJ Literacy party on January 27th.  If you'd like to volunteer, please contact the school. Thanks!

We have started a new unit in Math on Addition and Subtraction to 18.  In this unit, your child will be developing strategies for adding and subtracting 1-digit numbers.  The learning goals for the unit are:  • Developing and using mental math strategies to add and subtract two 1-digit numbers, including zero. • Looking for patterns in digits when adding and subtracting.   • Understanding and using the relationship between addition and subtraction; for example, 2 + 7 = 9 and 9 – 7 = 2   • Finding out if 2 sides of a number sentence are equal or not equal; for example, 10 = 6 + 4 and 3 + 6 ≠ 10

Please take a moment to listen to the wonderful Christmas stories written by the boys and girls in 2M.

Students are asked to practice the Christmas concert song for home work.   Please give me some candy in my stocking. Candy canes with stripes of white and red. All that sugar makes a tasty breakfast. and makes me jump 'til Mom gets out of bed.   Please give me a CD in my stocking. The loudest rock and roll one that you've found. I can listen to it on my ipod The music makes me want to dance around! and jump!   Please give me some oranges in my stocking. Christmas oranges always taste the best. My hands and face get juicy and quite sticky. So I wipe them on my PJ's - "what a mess" and dance! and jump!   Please give me some chocolate in my stocking. Chocolate is my favorite kind of treat. Wrapped in shiny paper it's delicious. The chocolate makes me want to kick my feet! and wipe and dance and jump

This week in 2M: We will be starting Fast ForWord on Monday!  Fast ForWord is a computer based Language Arts program that develops and strengthens memory, attention, processing rate, and sequencing which results in a wide range of improved critical language and reading skills.    We will record our food stories and work on our presentation for our pen pals.  Our weekly Skype will be on Tuesday. We will also be starting to make Christmas cards and gifts to send to Dallas.   The Writing Trait that we are working on this month is Word Choice.  Word choice helps writers create images, capture a reader's attention and make your story memorable.   We will continue to practice our song for the Christmas concert with Ms. Sheasgreen's class.

We had an interesting Skype today with our Dallas pen pals. They were celebrating Grandparents Day so we got a chance to see and talk to some of our pen pal's grandparents! They were very interested in our weather.  We held the webcam to the window so that they could see our new snow and Mia got dressed in her snowsuit so they could see what we are wearing to school these days.    In Math, we are learning about equal and unequal sets and are learning how to compare numbers to 100.   We are working hard to finish up our food creature stories and will record them soon.
