We have started a new unit in math called Geometry.  The students will be learning about 2D and 3D shapes.  The learning goals for the unit from the Math Makes Sense resource are: Compare and sort objects or shapes according to one attribute, such as number of sides or whether they have curves. Describe objects and shapes.  For example, some objects can roll, some have points, some are curved, and some can stack. Reproduce composite objects and shapes, such as towers. Identify shapes on objects, such as a circle on the bottom of a yogurt container.

For the month of April the boys and girls have been working on Word Choice in their writing.  We talked about how using our five senses can help us make our stories better and rich with details.  Here is a story they wrote today.   Popcorn The hot melted butter makes the popcorn feel greasy and slippery in my mouth.  When I chew on it, it goes CRUNCH! Sometimes it looks like little yellow and white balls with skirts on them.   When it is cooking it POPS! The smell reminds us of watching a movie at our house or at the movie theatre.  It tastes magnificent because of the different flavours we put on our popcorn.  Cameron’s favourite flavour is dill pickle.  He says that it has a sweet and sour taste to it.  Samantha likes cheddar and barbeque mixed together because it is her father’s favourite kind too. Logan likes his popcorn plain because he doesn’t like having greasy butter all over his fingers.  How do you like your popcorn?                                            by,  Mrs. O'Toole's Grade One Class

The boys and girls have been working hard on their Healthy Eating songs.  You can listen to their songs listed below.  They created the songs on their own and used the tune of a familiar song.  They had to include some of the foods in their food group and include the recommended servings per day for their age group.  Awesome job! Please stay tuned for the Milk and Alternatives song to be added shortly.
