This week in Math we are focusing on Subtraction.  Students are learning that subtraction involves taking one group away from another.  They are creating and solving subtraction story problems up to the number 12.  For subtraction story problems you could have your child at home make up different subtraction story problems using their toys.  (Example: There are 10 Hot Wheel cars parked on the floor and 8 drive away.  How many Hot Wheel cars are left?) See the web links below for subtraction practice. (If a screen comes up and asks you to subscribe, just click Maybe Later).

This week in Math we will be continuing with our unit on Addition and Subtraction.  The focus will be on Adding Doubles and Addition Story Problems. For addition story problems you could have your child at home make up different addition story problems using their toys.  (Example: There are 3 Webkinz on the chair and 4 more Webkinz join them.  How many Webkinz are there altogether?) See the web links below for addition practice!!

  Dear Readers, Happy Halloween to all!  We were so busy working on Halloween activities this week.  Last Friday we decorated a pumpkin for Pizza Delight and on Monday we decorated another pumpkin that is on display in the office.  On Tuesday we all wrote spooky stories for our reading buddies.  They wrote spooky stories for us and we shared them together.  We were not scared of their stories, but they were really scared of ours.  Wednesday was Scary Hair Day.  We had webs, skeletons, hair spray, spiders and hair that just stuck up in the air.  We had lots of fun getting our hair ready in the morning.  Thanks parents for helping us with our hair.  We all wore orange and black on Thursday and Dalton even had orange and black in his hair.  Our school President, Jarad, took our picture for Orange and Black Day.  We are all EXCITED for this afternoon because we get to wear our costumes for the Halloween Costume Parade.    Our costumes are: Kaylee - Devil Skylar - Bumblebee Cameron - Iron Man Megan - Hula Dancer Braydan - Wolverine Logan - Star Wars character Dalton - Pirate Drew - Princess Mia - Spiderella Gillian - An action figure Jaden - Wolverine Samantha - Princess Hunter - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Evan - Star Wars character Keisha - Fairy HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!                                    Sincerely,                                        Mrs. O'Toole's Grade One Class P.S. Bud just returned to our classroom today.  He was in the United States visiting McGruff and Scruff.  He stayed longer to help them film a Halloween Safety movie.  We are glad he is back.  We love him because he writes us letters and he is really cute.

Welcome to grade one!  We are happy students.  We really love school and we do lots of fun things.  In school we like gym, math, recess, reading to self, read to someone, math centres, reading with our grade four buddies and the Writer’s Workshop.  Our classroom is special because we have Bud. Bud is a dog that loves to write us letters and go on adventures.  We write him letters and he writes us back.  We will write more about Bud’s adventures soon. WE LOVE LEARNING!                                                 Written by,                                                 Logan, Evan, Kaylee, Megan, Mia, Gillian,                                                 Hunter, Skylar, Samantha, Jaden, Dalton, Drew,                                                 Keisha, Lushula, Braydan and Cameron

A ten frame is a really neat organizer that helps students with recognizing numbers, building numbers, addition and subtraction.  This can be made at home to help your child with math.  The first row must be filled in first before you move to the second row.  When removing the counters you must start on the second row on the right and work your way to the left.  *Check out the class Links on the right hand side of this page for online games using the ten frame.

This morning the Fire Fighters presented a presentation on Fire Safety for Fire Prevention Week.  It would be a great idea to talk to your child about what they learned about fire safety and also discuss and practice your fire escape plan at home.  Thanks :)

In math, your child is learning number relationships.  To help your child deepen their understanding of number relationships that we covered so far, you can have them practice the following:Reading and printing numbers to 20 and have them match numbers to a given set of objects.Reading number words from 0-20. (zero, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty)Practice counting forward and backward using the numbers 0-20.Make different arrangements of objects, dots, drawings etc. for a given number. (Example ... .. or .... . for the number 5)

    The Gretna Green Science Fair was a big hit in my class.  The students worked with a partner and decided on what they wanted to test using the scientific process.  Materials were gathered and students worked hard on their projects at school.  They completed all the steps in the scientific process including their hypothesis, list of materials needed, methods, results and their conclusion.  The students were excited to show and explain their projects to the rest of the students at Gretna Green and to the judges.  Some of the projects included, testing different styles of paper airplanes to see which one would go further and figuring out if an ice cube in water would melt faster than an ice cube not in water.  The projects were all well done.

~~~~Castle Building Contest~~~~ On May 5th and May 7th one of our math centers was a Castle Building Contest.  We are exploring Geometry in math class and the Castle Building Contest let us use our math skills when working with the attribute blocks.  In our groups we had to work as a team to build the castle.  It was an excellent time!  Each group had a picture taken with their castle so that the rest of the school could vote on the best castle between Mrs. Moody’s class and Miss O’Reilly’s class.  On Monday, May 11 during the live morning announcements Group 7 found out that they won.  Molly, Matthew, Amanda and Sarah were in Group 7 and received a certificate from Mrs. Simmons.  The certificate said “Queen of the Castle” for the girls and “King of the Castle” for the boys.  All 8 groups had a terrific time working on their castles.
