LITERACY:  We are working on strenghtening the beginning of our stories by looking at the 5'w.  Students are thinking about:   When, Who, Where, What and Why before they write the introduction of their stories.  Using the 5w's will help them have a great beginning to their stories. Spelling:  This week we are focusing on double consonant words: dd, ss, ff, ll.  MATH: For the month of December we will continue to review: numbers from 0-20, before and after number concepts and using the terms more and less than when describing numbers. SHOW AND TELL:  For this month, we will all share our show and tells on Thursday, December 22. CHRISTMAS CONCERT:  This year, the grade one classes have two songs to sing.  They are Away in a Manger  and O Christmas tree.  Please practice these songs at home.  The words to these songs are attached under the document folder.   Have a great week and remember boys and girls to do your best always!!

Spelling:  Students are working on the chunk "ug" this week.  Students are aware that our hard working vowel for this week is "u".  Please review their spelling nightly and practice writing their words using lower case letters.   Writing:  Students are learning to use their "Writers Eye" when writing stories.  When they finished a piece of writing they can check to see if they have done the following: 1.  Did I use capital letters at the beginning of my sentence? 2.  Do I see finger spaces between all the words I wrote? 3.  Do I see lowercase letters throughout my sentence? 4.  Do I see punctuation at the end of my sentence?   Math:  This week we are looking at creating number lines using ten frames.  Our focus is on numbers from 1 to 20.  Please continue to practice the formation of numbers between 10 - 20 as some students continue to struggle with the orientation of their numbers. Example:  12 is written 21.   Have a great week!

Our Remembrance Day Service will be held Thursday at 10:30.  All are welcomed.   There is no school Friday, November 11, 2011.   SPELLING: Students are learning the ot word family.    MATH:  This week students are learning how numbers can be divided into 2 parts.  Example  9 is 2 and 7 or 9 is 8 and 1 We are using 2 part mats and counters for this activity.  Students are learning terms like equal groups - groups that have the same amount, and singles - this is what is left over, example 8 can be divided into 3, 3( equal groups) and 2 are the singles left over. This is a very important concept as it gets them ready for addition.   Communication Logs are now being sent home weekly.  They will go home at the end of the week.   Have a great week and enjoy this beautiful weather we are having!

No school Friday:  Please remember to send back students homework books on Thursday this week.  Book orders: Due Thursday, November 3. Spelling:  This week we are looking at the word family id.  This is a new hard working vowel for students.  The past few weeks we have put to work our a and e but we thought we would give them a break and put the vowel i to work. Remembrance Day Service: This will be held next Next Thursday, November 10 at 10:30 Math:  Students are using dot cards and ten frames for counting.  We are talking about when it is easy for count and when it is hard to count.  Example Students who use dice a lot can recognize number configurations quickly from 1 to 6.  In kindergarten, students were introduced to 5 frames.  If they are solid in this, they are able to use this strategy to count to 10 faster.  Hint of the Week:  It is very important that students attend to punctuation in their reading.  If they do not stop at periods and exclamation marks or pause at comma's,  their reading can become confusing causing them to lose the meaning. Example:  "Come here, Dad," shouted Tom. "Look! Here is a plane." (correct way)                 "Come here Dad shouted Tom Look here is a plane (incorrect way)
